By exploring the reigns of the Asantehene with a focus on Otumfoɔ Kwaku Dua Panin and Otumfoɔ Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II, the paper seeks to examine Asante’s indigenous diplomatic strategies adopted in pre-unification engagements and to contain their neighbours (internally and externally), expand trade and commerce and of restoration of the Asante Kingdom in 1935.  The paper further focusses on the significant roles played by the two Asantehenes at different periods in the history of Asante and their specific strategies to respond to diverse challenges in maintaining the Kingdom’s relevance through different historical periods.

Lastly, the paper seeks to answer the overarching question of how the knowledge, skills, and competence utilized by the two Asantehenes, in particular, depicting the flexibility and adaptability that were needed then and their relevance for modern diplomatic relations in Ghana.
